SUMMERVILLE TIMES, NOVEMBER, 2013
Everyone knows that Halloween is October 31, but do they know that this is
really the eve of All Saints Day? Jack o’ lanterns, witches, and black cats
make a brief appearance on this popular holiday, but the Christian festival is
all about celebrating the witness of those who have gone before us in the
faith. Some of these saints are revered historical figures who have left their
mark upon the church’s history. Others are beloved friends and family members
who have made their own unique contributions to the life of the church. This
special day falls on November 1, but we shall be remembering these loved ones
in our worship on November 3.
November 10 is designated “Caregiver Sunday.” Many of us have found ourselves
in that valued role--taking care of a family member, reaching out to a neighbor
or friend in their time of need, or perhaps sharing this ministry in the life
of the congregation. No ministry is closer to the heart of Jesus, and these
caregivers deserve our prayers and support.
A national day of Thanksgiving is observed on November 28. This is the only
national holiday with distinctive religious roots and meaning. There will be
ecumenical services in many communities across the nation, and most churches
will gather on this day or offer their thanksgivings on the Sunday before or
after the holiday. We will be celebrating this day of Thanksgiving at
Summerville on Sunday, November 24. Families will also offer their
thanksgivings as they enjoy a bountiful feast. Let us share the bounty with
others who have so little, even on this day.
Veteran’s Day is November 11. We will recognize our veterans in worship on
November 10. We are indebted to them for serving our country and preserving our
freedom in war and in peace.
Thanks to all who joined us for our workday on October 26. It was a time of
good fellowship, and it was very rewarding to provide this special care for the
beautiful grounds surround our church.
I will be taking a vacation Sunday on November 10. Our family will be
visiting the Biltmore House, which will be decorated for Christmas. My friend,
Gene Pierce, will be your guest preacher that day. Gene and Shirley were
members of our church family in Cary. I know you will give them a warm welcome.
Blessings to all!
Pastor Tom
